Idris Elba is famously handsome. Even so, the 45-year-old actor is set to portray Quasimodo – yes, of The Hunchback of Notre Dame fame – in an upcoming film for Netflix. Elba will not only star as the titular character, but will also direct and produce the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In case you happened to miss the acclaimed 1996 Disney adaptation, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is centered on an ostracized bell-ringer who falls for a street dancer named Esmeralda, all the while living under the thumb of a ruthless archdeacon. Oh, and there are songs! The upcoming modern adaptation will reportedly be a “sonic and musical experience,” with Elba even producing original music. (Fun fact: Elba was a DJ long before he got into acting.)
Idris Elba Has an Excellent Idea For Who the Next James Bond Should Be: “A Black Woman”
Michael Mitnick, who worked on The Giver and HBO’s Vinyl, will write the adaptation. Producers Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger, of Insidious and La La Land, respectively, have also been attached to the project, along with Ana Garanito, who works on Elba’s Green Door Pictures production company. No word yet on who will be doing the makeup, but they have a hell of a job ahead of them.
The impending Charmed reboot continues to draw mixed reactions – particularly from the show’s original cast. Following the initial cast announcement and subsequent trailer release, many fans of the 1998 series felt as though it wouldn’t be the same without the original Halliwell sisters: Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty, and Alyssa Milano. Now, Combs is candidly speaking about the reboot.
After she felt a publication recently misrepresented her quotes, Combs reached out to another writer on Twitter to share her thoughts. “I will never understand what is fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to a job they did 12 years ago,” Combs said. The actress added that she hopes the reboot honors the original show’s legacy and listens to the “still passionate fan base.” Ultimately, however, Combs said she does wish the reboot and its cast success.
This isn’t the first time the cast has publicly spoken out against the reboot. Combs has in the past addressed the reboot on Twitter and even said the reboot is “capitalizing on our hard work.” Doherty meanwhile has tried to take a more positive approach. She said, “I love Charmed. I also want it to be respected. I’m simply choosing to be constructive about it because negativity has no place in my life.”

This Complex Theory About Get Out Is So Deep, Even Jordan Peele Was Impressed
Believe it or not, there was a little confusion about whether or not Harry would indeed ask William to be his best man. Following the engagement news in November 2017, William joked that he had not yet been formally asked. “He hasn’t asked me yet, just to clear that up. It could be a sensitive subject,” William said. By April, however, Kensington Palace confirmed that Harry had of course asked his brother to be fill the position.
We’re glad he did after all. If not, we wouldn’t have ended up with so many heartwarming pictures of the regal duo. Ahead, see all the best brotherly moments to come out of the most highly anticipated wedding of the year.

Freeform just made an exciting change to its annual 13 Nights of Halloween schedule: for the first year ever, the network’s Halloween programming will last throughout the entire month of October! Freeform made the 31 Nights of Halloween announcement during its upfront presentation on May 15, as well as on Twitter.
In years prior, the full schedule has been announced in September, so Freeform has understandably not yet released the lineup for this year. The network did, however, imply that there will be an emphasis on Hocus Pocus in celebration of the movie’s 25th anniversary. No matter the content headed our way, we’ll certainly be tuning in to all 31 days of this television extravaganza and, essentially, Halloween history in the making.
Several esteemed actresses are teaming up for an empowering spy movie that could potentially evolve into a franchise, and we are so ready. Deadline has exclusively learned the movie, titled 355, will star Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, and Lupita Nyong’o. The five actresses recently appeared at the Cannes Film Festival together to publicly announce the thriller.
Simon Kinberg, who recently made his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, is set to direct 355. As a star of the upcoming X-Men movie, Chastain worked closely with Kinberg and it was then that she pitched her idea. “I had so much fun working on The Help that I always wanted to do another female ensemble film,” Chastain said.
Attention, Hollywood: Here Are the Women We Want to See as Indiana Jones
The actress then cited the Bourne and Mission: Impossible franchises as her inspiration but wondered why there aren’t more female ensemble spy films apart from Charlie’s Angels. “That got my wheels going, along with the idea of casting actresses from all over the world to truly make it an international project,” she said. “I realized the incredible creative freedom we would have with that.”
It was important to Chastain that all the actresses appeared together at Cannes to signal the beginning of their “journey together,” she said. That same day, Nyong’o shared a selfie of the star-studded group with the caption, “Get on board.” Oh, we are.
Controversy is coming to Jurassic World‘s upcoming sequel. Prior to the movie’s release on June 22, Variety published a sampling of industry salaries. Included in the list were the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom salaries of coleads Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard – which revealed that Pratt earned $2 million more than Howard.
According to the report, Howard earned $8 million for the upcoming blockbuster flick while Pratt was paid $10 million. The sizable gender pay gap has been met with much criticism given that both actors were heavily featured in the first film and it is expected that the same can be said for the sequel.
News Flash: Asking Male Actors to Donate Their Salary Isn’t Going to Fix Hollywood’s Wage Gap
The news comes after Netflix’s The Crown received backlash over a similar discrepancy. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Claire Foy, who portrays Queen Elizabeth II, was paid less than Matt Smith, who portrays Prince Philip. In addition to issuing a public apology, the production company behind the series gave Foy $275,000 in back pay.
Universal Pictures has yet to release a formal statement addressing the gender pay gap controversy.
Patty Jenkins continues to make strides for female directors. After previously setting the record for highest-grossing film directed by a woman with 2017’s Wonder Woman, Jenkins is about to set another as the highest-paid female director of all time. According to Variety, Jenkins will be earning $9 million to direct the Wonder Woman sequel, more than tripling her pay from the first film.
Many are now pointing out that the substantial pay raise will put her in line to break the record believed to have been previously held by Nancy Meyers. Though there’s no official record on the matter, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the It’s Complicated and The Holiday director earned an average of $5 million per film at her peak.
For Patty Jenkins, Making Wonder Woman Was Literally a Dream Come True
Apart from being a massive personal win, the hope is that Jenkins’s raise and prominence will only continue to open more doors for other female directors and make it so that they are able to be as equally rewarded as their male counterparts.
Nick Jonas apparently doesn’t have the time nor the patience to sit in NYC traffic. That might be why the 25-year-old singer decided to ditch the usual lavish limousine ride – yawn – and instead hopped on the subway to arrive at the extravagant and very exclusive Met Gala. On Instagram, Nick shared several shots from his shockingly down-to-earth commute. Even so, a fellow passenger caught a video of Nick leaving the subway station surrounded by security and a personal videographer. (Oh, that’s totally how our commutes look, too.) Ahead, see pictures of Nick’s journey through the New York City tunnels and to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Christina Aguilera is about to release her eighth studio album, titled Liberation, following six years of radio silence. The 37-year-old singer recently released a music video for her new single, “Accelerate.” Now, Aguilera has released a vulnerable and intimate trailer for her impending album.
In the video, Aguilera waxes poetic as she shares childhood pictures, reads old journal entries, and plays at home with her daughter. On the inspiration for her album, Aguilera said, “To me the purest of reasons, is to get back to that little girl who just wants to be inspired again by truth and by that sense of passion for music.” Adding, “I’ve stepped so far away from that little girl and if that means go away for a little while and figuring out who you are again and what you have to say, then that’s what you need to do.”
Liberation will be released June 15. It will consist of 15 songs, one featuring Demi Lovato. On this seemingly new chapter of her musical career, Aguilera simply said, “F*ck it, this is who I am.”
Here’s your friendly reminder that horror movies are not, in fact, real life. Even so, it’s easy to forget that as you’re immersed in the story, watching a helpless protagonist run away from a deranged killer or a spirit float through the hallways of a family’s isolated manor. You know what helps? Looking at behind-the-scenes pictures from the movies that terrify you. Black Swan becomes much less maddening when Natalie Portman is just chatting up the director, and the same can be said for A Quiet Place when you remember that John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are married in real life and not actually hiding from monsters. Ahead, see 30-plus on-set horror movie pictures that will hopefully make you a little less scared of them.

When envisioning the music video for “Kevin’s Heart” off his new album KOD, J. Cole decided to cast the song’s titular muse – even if the song is about said muse’s cheating scandal. Released on April 24, the video follows comedian Kevin Hart as he grapples with his highly publicized infidelity, both dodging judgmental bystanders and tempting flirts.
In an emotional Instagram video in 2017, Hart admitted he’d made a mistake and apologized. “At the end of the day man, I just simply have got to do better,” Hart said. It appears he has since repaired his relationship with his wife, Eniko Parrish, and the couple also welcomed their first child late last year. The very end of the music video mirrors Hart’s tearful sentiment as clouds form the words “choose wisely.”
Professor Goldberg has entered the classroom, and class is back in session, Hogwarts! On April 22, Whoopi Goldberg attended the opening night of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway, in full costume, while wearing an adorable Gryffindor robe. It appears the iconic 62-year-old actress and host on The View is actually a longtime fan of the franchise, and even attended the New York City premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 back in 2011. Ahead, enjoy glorious pictures of Whoopi honoring the evening’s unofficial dress code like the true Potterhead we never knew she was.

As the world eagerly awaited the birth of the third royal baby, many were surprised to see the news being proclaimed by a traditional (if not cartoon-like) town crier on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital. The news, however, was not in fact delivered by the heavily decorated gentleman. Instead, the official announcement was delivered by Kensington Palace on Twitter, while an easel was also displayed in front of Buckingham Palace.
So, what was going on with that town crier? As it turns out, Tony Appleton is the 81-year-old official town crier for the town of Romford, England. He is, however, a sort of freelance town crier who is also available for hire to appear at corporate events and parties. To no surprise, Tony also previously appeared to announce the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as the births of Princess Charlotte and Prince George. So while he certainly has no official royal connections, at this point, he’s a certified staple.

Kendrick Lamar’s list of accolades and awards just got a remarkable addition. On April 16, it was announced that the 30-year-old rapper was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his 2017 album DAMN., which was praised by the board as a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.” Lamar was up against composers Michael Gilbertson and Ted Hearne, respectively. It’s no doubt an especially exciting achievement for Lamar since he’s the first rapper to win the prize.
Lamar has had a powerful impact on hip-hop and music as a whole ever since he burst onto the scene in 2012 with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. In the time since he’s wracked up critical acclaim and won an impressive 11 Grammys for his body of work, which includes searing lyrics about fame, his Compton upbringing, and the black experience in America.
The highly anticipated follow-up to 2011’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is finally taking shape. That being said, it’s going to be a whole different franchise with Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, and David Fincher all out. Instead, Claire Foy will be taking on the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which is actually the fourth book in the franchise. The film’s director and several cast members recently appeared together for the first time at a press event in Stockholm, assuring fans that the film is indeed happening.
Joining The Crown actress is Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason, who will be replacing Craig as brooding journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Meanwhile Atlanta actor Lakeith Stanfield will be portraying Alona Casales, an NSA agent tracking Salander. Also present at the photocall were actor Stephen Merchant and director Fede Álvarez, most famous for his 2016 horror film Don’t Breathe.
Though we initially had a difficult time imagining Foy as the antisocial hacker with an all-black wardrobe, her latest appearance is doing a lot to shift our perspective. The Girl in the Spider’s Web is slated for release later this year on Nov. 9.
Your new Netflix obsession, Wild Wild Country, got the full Saturday Night Live treatment, because it was really only a matter of time. The mind-blowingly accurate skit – featured in the recent episode hosted by John Mulaney on April 14 – is a hysterical recreation of the documentary series and its interviews with various former members and leaders in the infamous Rajneesh movement. Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad even made an appearance to portray Ma Anand Sheela! The comedic twist, however, comes in the form of Kenan Thompson who plays a dubious sannyasin who’s only really there “for the ass.” Watch the spot-on skit in all of its ridiculous glory above.
Khloé Kardashian has given birth to a baby girl! The 33-year-old reality TV star reportedly delivered her baby in a hospital outside of Cleveland on April 12 with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson by her side. The birth unfortunately came just days after rumors emerged that the 27-year-old basketball player had reportedly cheated on Khloé several times throughout her pregnancy. Given the excitement surrounding Khloé’s first baby – mixed with the shock surrounding Tristan’s alleged affairs – the internet had plenty to process once the news broke. Ahead, read some tweets that pretty much sum it up.

Empire Records is about to come back in a big way. The 1995 cult classic about a group of record store employees is about to be turned into a musical on Broadway. According to Deadline, the stage adaptation will be produced by Bill Weiner alongside Carol Heikkinen, who originally wrote the film.
“The movie was really about a family that formed among these minimum-wage record clerks,” said Heikkinen in a statement. “There’s a lot of nostalgia now for those old record stores where you could go and talk to people who loved the same music you loved, and discover new bands.”
As of right now, the musical is set to premiere in 2020 in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary. Unfortunately, no additional details have been revealed about the cast or production team. We know they’re pretty busy these days, but here’s hoping Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger reprise their roles for one last Rex Manning Day.
