Why the Semicolon Tattoo Is So Important to 13 Reasons Why

By | May 18, 2018

A post shared by I’m fine. (@rozulado) on

In addition to the fact that Polaroids are the new cassette tapes on 13 Reasons Why, we know that Alex (Miles Heizer) will be coming back, aka he did not die from that gunshot. We also know that Hannah’s story (Katherine Langford) isn’t exactly over, and there will be a big trial that the town isn’t exactly happy about.

What we also know is that Clay (Dylan Minnette) gets a semicolon tattoo, and there is a deeper meaning behind it. In fact, there is a special meaning behind anyone getting a semicolon tattoo.

While Clay’s tattoo, which we see happening in the beginning of season two, is a fictional tattoo, a few members of the cast of 13 Reasons Why along with executive producer Selena Gomez have actually gotten a semicolon tattoo in real life – and it all links back to the special meaning we’ve been hinting at.

Since a semicolon is a pause in a sentence, as opposed to the end of a sentence, the symbol has come to be linked with mental health awareness. Project Semicolon was started by Amy Bleuel to help her mental health awareness campaign, and it spread like wildfire.

Project Semicolon has encouraged people to draw – or get tattoos – on their bodies of a semicolon to represent support for those dealing with mental illness and suicide. “A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life,” Project Semicolon’s website reads.

Since 13 Reasons Why’s story shows the truth, both good and bad, about suicide and how it affects everyone near and dear to the person who actually commits the act, it makes sense that the show would have Clay getting a tattoo in Hannah’s honor.

When Tommy Dorfman (who plays Ryan Shaver) got his semicolon tattoo with Gomez and fellow castmate Alisha Boe (who plays Jessica Davis), he shared what it meant to the three stars, and it’s clear Project Semicolon and suicide awareness was at the heart of it.

“The ; symbol stands for an end of one thought and a beginning of another. Instead of a period, authors use the semicolon to continue a sentence. For us, it means a beginning of another chapter in life, in lieu of ending your life,” he captioned a photo on Instagram in 2017.

After telling his own story of struggling with addiction and depression, Tommy added a call to action in his post. “Ask for help. Start a new chapter with the support of others,” he wrote.

The semicolon tattoo might not be real on 13 Reasons Why but the meaning is powerful and real. It is about continuing your story even if you want to end it and not giving into the suicidal thoughts or rough times. It’s moving and something to take note of, just like the Netflix series itself.

13 Reasons Why: Will Miles Heizer Be in Season 2? Everything We Know

By | May 3, 2018

Season two of 13 Reasons Why premieres this month, and we can barely contain our excitement. After season one concluded with a few cliffhangers and Netflix released its second season trailer this week, our confusion is at an all-time high.

One of the biggest questions we need answered is whether Miles Heizer, who played Alex Standall in season one, will be returning. In case you need a little refresher, something big happens to his character at the end of last season, and it has everyone worried for his future.

In addition to learning that Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) has given the tapes to Mr. Porter in hopes that he will get justice for Jessica (Alisha Boe) and Hannah (Katherine Langford) – at least in regard to Bryce (Justin Prentice) – Alex has a big finale twist. In the last few minutes of that intense season finale, we learn that Alex is brought to the hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The bad news is that Alex isn’t in the new season trailer that Netflix unveiled earlier this week. The good news is that he is still on Mrs. Baker’s (Kate Walsh) mystery board, which is one of many signs that he’s not dead. In fact, according to the actor who plays him, he is for sure alive in season two, but that doesn’t mean he’s OK.

After the shocking finale, Heizer spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that if fans were paying attention, they would’ve seen the obvious signs that Alex was dealing with suicidal tendencies. Plus, he did shoot himself; it wasn’t Tyler, as some fans theorized based on his possible school shooting plan.

“It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah, because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season,” Heizer told The Hollywood Reporter back in May 2017. He then explained that there is more of his character’s story to be told in season two.

“That’s another subject that’s very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I’m sure that will bring a crazy set of issues,” he continued. “It would be interesting to go into that.”

Showrunner Brian Yorkey told Entertainment Weekly last year that the plan was to fill fans in on what happened after all those cliffhangers, which included Alex’s attempted suicide. “We’re going to answer all of the burning questions that people have about [the show],” he said at the time. “Is Tyler going to do something? What’s going to happen to Alex? Will Bryce be brought to justice? We’re going to answer those questions but I think, even more, we’re going to continue to look very truthfully and very honestly at what they go through, even when it’s painful at times.”

The Parenthood alum talked to Us Weekly earlier this year about the sophomore season of the Netflix hit, and it’s clear that his character’s story is not over. “I think [the taboo topics] are kind of in the same amount as the first season. We’re just talking about real issues that people don’t talk about that much, but I feel like are actually talking about more, especially right now in our culture,” Heizer told the magazine in March 2018. “I think this season’s gonna be very relevant. I’m excited for it to come out and for people to see what’s going on.”

Not only will Alex’s story keep unfolding, but fans will also meet his mother, played by Meredith Monroe, this season. That will definitely be a new twist and turn for the series, which has adults but is mainly focused on how the high schoolers have dealt with Hannah’s suicide.

13 Reasons Why returns for its second season on May 18 on Netflix.

So . . . About That Spider-Man Scene in Avengers: Infinity War

By | May 1, 2018

There are so many characters to fall in love with within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and even more to simply keep track of – but Spider-Man is one that you can’t help but love. He’s one of the most iconic comic book characters ever, and even though there have been many versions of him over time, we’re currently obsessed with Tom Holland’s young Spider-Man version. This brings us to Avengers: Infinity War and what on earth is going on!

Warning: Avengers: Infinity War spoilers ahead!

In the final scene of Avengers: Infinity War the good guys were getting ready to face Thanos and his minions when all of a sudden half of them disintegrate, leaving the rest of the heroes and fans everywhere stunned. So, who is dead and who just vanished? Unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmed answer for either one. What we do know is that Spider-Man is one of the guys who disappeared – along with Star-Lord, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and more – and therefore could be dead. While we’re not too happy about it, we’re also convinced he’ll return.

For starters, Spider-Man is too young to die! OK, we know that there is no age limit when it comes to dying in the face of danger in hopes of saving the world, but still. There’s already a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel on the books from Marvel. Since Holland has played Peter Parker and Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Avengers: Infinity War we’re pretty confident he’ll be reprising his role for the Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel.

Yes, Holland could be replaced – clearly, he wouldn’t even be the first Spider-Man to be recast – and that makes us a little worried. On the bright side, Marvel has stuck with the same actors for most of its major characters for years now. Hopefully, it’ll do the same with Spider-Man and Holland will have a job for a while now. This would mean that he does survive Infinity War, or it could mean that the Homecoming sequel takes place in another time to allow him to reprise the role but actually die in the latest Avengers film.

Clearly things are a little complicated in the Avengers world right now, but since there is another Spider-Man movie slated to star Holland – as of now – we’re going to go with the fact that he’s not dead, but perhaps in an alternate reality. Fingers crossed that we’re right!

Did You Catch All These Clues About Season 2 in the 13 Reasons Why Trailer?

By | May 1, 2018

Season two of 13 Reasons Why is almost here. In fact, it premieres this month – on May 18 – and there are a lot of things that we already have questions about.

After Netflix revealed its season two trailer and teased that instead of 13 cassette tape clues, it will focus on Polaroids and pictures to help “uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up,” we need answers ASAP! Throughout the new trailer for the highly anticipated second season of the teen drama, it becomes clear that Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) story isn’t over.

While season one looks at the clues as to why she died by suicide, season two will focus on the aftermath of her death and how her classmates and family members continue to be affected by it. Plus, the Baker family is going to court, which means the tale of their daughter and her tragic road to suicide will continue to haunt the town.

Who else will be on the hot seat this season, and which characters are already on our radar? Well, a lot of them, actually, like Clay Jensen (played by Dylan Minnette) who continues to feel the pressures of unraveling Hannah’s story.

Check out a few clues that you might’ve missed while watching the trailer in our gallery now to see which characters are still causing a commotion at Liberty High and which ones are clearly still troubled by everything that happened last season.

A Closer Look at Every Ominous Polaroid in the 13 Reasons Why Trailer

By | May 1, 2018

The wait is finally over . . . we have an official premiere date for 13 Reasons Why, so get your calendars out, and write this down. Season two of the hit Netflix series is coming May 18, which is just weeks away, and we’re freaking out.

In addition to Netflix releasing the premiere date for the highly anticipated sophomore season of 13 Reasons Why, they dropped an all-new teaser trailer that you need to watch. As fans know, season one of the show follows the death of Hannah (played by Katherine Langford), who leaves behind 13 cassette tapes for her classmates to uncover.

Based on the newest trailer, season two will have a similar show-and-tell aspect to it, but this time it’ll be as a result of photographic evidence. According to Netflix via Variety, this season will pick up after Hannah’s death and will feature a “series of ominous Polaroids” that lead Clay (played by Dylan Minnette) and his classmates to search for even more answers. This time around, they’re trying to uncover a “sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up,” and we’ve already gotten our first look at some of the clues.

The Exact Time the Newest Royal Was Born – and What It May Mean

By | April 23, 2018

England has another heir to the throne now that Kate Middleton and Prince William have welcomed their third child. The happy couple had a baby boy on Monday (April 23), and from the moment Kate headed to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning, fans of the royals were on baby watch . . . and they didn’t have to wait that long to see the healthy baby boy.

While some births can take days, Kate’s deliveries have been somewhat short traditionally, and her latest baby delivery was no different. So what exactly happened and when did the world get another prince? We’ve got it all covered below.

Around 6 a.m. local time (aka across the pond), Kensington Palace announced on social media that the Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, were on their way to the hospital because Kate was in labor.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London earlier this morning in the early stages of labour,” the tweet read at what was about midnight on the West Coast of the United States. “The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”

A few short hours later – most likely without an epidural – Kate’s youngest of three was born and the announcement was made to the public . . . following the queen being notified and the couple’s family members. The announcement was made by royal decree outside of Buckingham Palace on an easel, as all royal births and deaths are, as well as on Kensington Palace’s Twitter account.

According to the palace, the newest royal baby was born at 11:01 a.m. local UK time and weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces. William was present for his son’s birth, as he was for his two other children’s deliveries, and only left to go get Prince George and Princess Charlotte to meet their baby brother before leaving the hospital. “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well,” the official announcement on Twitter read.

The newest member of the Cambridge family was born on St. George’s Day, which is England’s patron saint. He was born just a few days (two, to be exact) after his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s 92nd birthday and a little more than a week before his big sister’s third birthday (Charlotte was born on May 2).

Into astrology? According to astrologer Rich Milostan, the time you are born means something, and the newest prince’s time seems somewhat fitting. He said that anyone born within the 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. time frame “can go far in [their career]” and “could eventually have a name for themselves.” The little prince already has a name for himself, despite the fact that his actual name has yet to be revealed, and we have a feeling he will definitely go far in his career, no matter what he pursues . . . in addition to being a royal, of course.

The rest of Kate and William’s day went along without a hitch, and the parents of three went home in the evening as planned. Only seven hours after giving birth to her third child, Kate made her first appearance with the youngster and her husband – a little bit before 6 p.m. local time – before getting in the car and heading home to Kensington Palace to continue to recuperate.

“Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have received,” the couple’s Twitter account read after the family was safely back at home. “They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes.”

Congrats to the happy family – which is now a family of five – and the newest royal, who is now fifth in line for the throne!

FYI, the Town Crier Is Not Actually Affiliated With the Royal Family

By | April 23, 2018

Hear ye, hear ye, the royal baby is finally here!

On Monday, Kensington Palace announced both on Twitter and by putting up the official framed announcement at Buckingham Palace that the royal baby had finally arrived. Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed their third child, a baby boy, and these official announcements weren’t the only way people learned about the birth . . . the town crier was there to ring his bell and raise his voice.

While you might know a little bit about town criers, they are somewhat foreign to the American people, so we thought we’d explain their purpose and if they are at all relevant today. It’s true that with the invention of social media, the point of a town crier is moot, yet they still exist, and there are more than you’d think.

According to The Sun, the town crier dates back to times when literacy wasn’t widespread and has somehow lasted through modern times. They were originally commissioned to communicate and announce significant events to the townspeople such as new laws, births, deaths, etc. They were also known for walking the town at night to make sure everything was OK.

During medieval England, the town criers would get the crowd’s attention by yelling, “Oyez, oyez, oyez,” which means “hear ye, hear ye,” and then he’d ring a bell, pull out a scroll, and give everyone the news. Today, there are still 200 official town criers in the UK, according to The Guardian, but they aren’t necessarily needed.

When it came to the announcement of the third royal baby, there was in fact a town crier, but he is a self-described “independent town crier” who is not affiliated with the British royal family in any way.

This man is Tony Appleton, and he is 81 years old and a major fan of English traditions and the British royal family, which we can appreciate. Appleton was the unofficial town crier at both of Prince William’s children’s births thus far, so it makes sense that he’d show up for the newest addition to the royal family . . . even if he is technically an uninvited guest on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital.

Appleton might not be an official town crier to the royal family, but he is the official town crier to the town of Romford and has been for 14 years. When he does arrive at British royal family events, he dons the garb and gets really into his announcements so he looks the part, and we’re fans of this interesting unofficial tradition.

Over the years, he has rung his bell at more than just the royal baby births; he’s also been seen at corporate events all over the world and is a freelance town crier for hire. It’s bizarre, yes, but who are we to mess with tradition – even traditions of uninvited town criers honoring real town criers from year before him.

Whatever You Do, Do NOT Ask Prince Philip About The Crown

By | March 8, 2018

Movies and television series about the Royal Family have been around almost as long as the British Monarchy itself – OK, not really, but since the beginning of film and television, there have been a lot of pieces made about this iconic family – and the latest series causing a commotion is Netflix’s The Crown.

While it’s clear that fans and critics alike are very into the drama series – it’s already begun casting for its third season, and has won numerous awards – there is one group of people’s opinions who we really want to know: those of the British royal family.

Since The Crown began in 2016, there has been speculation about whether or not members of the current Monarchy are fans of it, or have ever even heard of it. It was later reported that Queen Elizabeth II, who the show focuses on as the main character, has in fact seen it, and likes it.

We’ve also learned that a few other members of the Queen’s family are fans of it, but what about her husband of 70 years? According to Matt Smith, who plays the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, on season one and season two of the show, he has heard that the Prince is not a big fan of it.

Throughout the first two seasons of The Crown, we’ve seen the rise of Queen Elizabeth II to power after the loss of her father, and how much of a strain it put on her family and her husband. That being said, when we did see Prince Philip, he was portrayed as a party boy who wasn’t exactly loyal to his wife and was definitely envious of her station in the Monarchy. Based on all of this, it makes sense that Prince Philip wouldn’t be tuning into the show.

As for what he reportedly has said on the topic, Matt opened up to The Observer about a story his friend told him, from an actual discussion with the Duke of Edinburgh himself. According to Matt, a close friend of his was dining with the royals when Prince Philip asked him, “What do you do? Are you involved in this Crown thing?”

The actor’s friend was not a part of The Crown, but he knew Matt, so he later followed-up on Prince Philip’s initial inquiry saying, “Philip, I’m just wondering, because I have some friends who made The Crown, have you watched any?” The Duke then reportedly said, “Don’t be ridiculous.”

Some time has passed since Prince Philip reportedly had this conversation with Matt’s friend, and the second season has been on Netflix since December 2017, so perhaps he’s changed his mind on the topic by now. Either way, Matt got a good laugh at the whole idea of Prince Philip weighing in on his portrayal.

“Whether it’s true or not, I don’t know, but I just think he’s a bit of a cool cat,” Smith explained to The Observer. “And that’s what I love about him: he’s done what he wants, when he wants, how he wants, with whom he wants. He hasn’t asked permission. And his wife’s the Queen.”

We still don’t know if Prince Philip said that The Crown, or at least him watching it, was in fact “ridiculous,” but we’d like to believe he’d say such a thing during a lavish dinner party, especially since his wife is a fan of the show. It makes for a good marital dynamic!

Ben Higgins Is Back in the Bachelor Spotlight, But Do You Remember His Final 3?

By | March 6, 2018

There have been a lot of dramatic and heartbreaking endings in Bachelor history, and although it didn’t exactly feel like it in the moment, Ben Higgins’s story falls into that category. Sure, the fact that his engagement didn’t last is sadly par for the course when it comes to this series, but that’s not the drama we’re talking about . . . at least not right now.

Let’s take it back to when Ben was the Bachelor: it was season 20, and we were down to the final three ladies. If you need a refresher, we’ve got you covered. Ben had Caila Quinn, JoJo Fletcher, and Lauren Bushnell (or the original Lauren B.) when it came down to the Fantasy Suites episode, and it sort of seemed like it could be anyone’s game.

After sending Caila home (breaking her heart in the process), Ben went on to tell both JoJo and Lauren that he loved them, which, as any loyal Bachelor viewer knows, is a big no-no. Seriously, Arie Luyendyk Jr. really should’ve taken notes on this one!

While the world was also falling for both women, Ben eventually made his choice and picked Lauren to have and to hold for the rest of his life . . . or so he planned. He did not give the final rose to JoJo, and she went on to be the next Bachelorette. (She’s currently engaged to her season’s winner.)

Ben and Lauren, however, didn’t live happily ever after. Ben dropped down on one knee during the season finale, and Lauren happily accepted. The two then decided to star on another reality series together, Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After?, and fans quickly saw that their romance wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.

One of their biggest issues, according to Lauren, was the fact that Ben did say “I love you” to JoJo before finally choosing her.

“I don’t think I’ve ever talked about how hurtful that was,” Lauren told People back in June 2017. “Looking back, I wish I could be like, ‘That’s why it didn’t work out,’ but I think it was just a very abnormal situation and one that, unfortunately, I mean, we tried.”

The couple called it quits in May 2017, and as we saw on The Bachelor Winter Games, Ben isn’t exactly ready to fall in love again, and we don’t blame him.

Maybe finding love on TV just isn’t for him . . . maybe.

  2. The duo really loves their dog. When Chelsea and Jordan got married, they decided that only one family member was important enough to make it to their elopement . . . their dog! Yes, their adorable pup made it to the nuptials, and it was exactly the way these two wanted it.
  3. Chelsea has good genes. The comedian isn’t the only one in her family who has entertaining as a career. Her brother Jonah Peretti is the founder and chief executive of BuzzFeed! The two have joked that Get Out was written about their family and now we know the humor also runs in the family. “Get Out is totally about our family!” Chelsea told the New York Times in 2017. “We have this thing in our family that goes back many years, it’s called ‘the Coagula,’” Jonah added, making quotation marks with his fingers. “Wait, I guess you have to see the movie for that to make sense.” Chelsea later added,”It’s funny to me that we’re both in the public eye with this movie, because it’s this sinister thing. I love it.”
  4. She’s outnumbered in her household. Chelsea might be able to stand alone up on stage, but being the lone female in her household is something she’s getting used to. In Summer of 2017, Chelsea and Jordan welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Beaumont Gino Peele, making Chelsea officially outnumbered in her house – but we bet she doesn’t mind.

P.S.: you should be following Chelsea on Instagram!

Meet the First Openly Transgender Oscars Presenter, Daniela Vega

By | March 5, 2018

Sunday night was all about the 90th annual Academy Awards, and although most people focus on the winners of the night like Allison Janney for I, Tonya (we see you, girl!) or Jordan Peele for best original screenplay, making him the first black writer to win the award, there were so many iconic moments throughout the night. We were especially impressed and excited about Daniela Vega’s big moment. If you’re not aware of who Daniela is or what her Oscars moment was, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

  1. She made Academy Award history. When Daniela stepped onto the stage for the Academy Awards this weekend as a presenter, she did so as the first openly transgender presenter! This is huge, and she totally nailed it. She introduced Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent to perform “Mystery of Love” from the Oscar-nominated film Call Me by Your Name, and she handled it with such style and grace.
  2. She was born and raised in Chile. The 28-year-old actress is from San Miguel, Santiago, Chile, and has lived in Chile her entire life, making her Oscars debut even more impressive and noteworthy.
  3. Her breakout role almost never happened. Daniela played Marina Vidal in the film A Fantastic Woman, which took home the award for best foreign language film. The film is about a transgender woman in Chile and the discrimination she encounters when her older boyfriend suddenly passes away, but she was initially hired only as a consultant for the film. “He asked to meet and there was an immediate trust and affection between us. He lived in Berlin at the time and I lived in Chile, so we e-mailed and we Skyped,” she told W magazine about her first talks with director Sebastián Lelio. “When we saw each other, we spent time together and had a great time. When he sent me the script for A Fantastic Woman that’s when I realized he wanted me for the role.”
  4. Her voice is out of this world. The Chilean actress has another big talent that you might not know about . . . she is a classically trained opera singer (with a mezzo-soprano voice). “It was a self-discovery for me to move from imitating others to me growing to sing in my own voice. The opera was difficult and it felt like a personal conquest,” she told W magazine in 2017.
  5. She went to an all-boys school. Daniela has faced hardships and overcome adversity throughout her life, especially when she attended an all-boys school at a young age. “I faced a certain amount of violence. It taught me that I had to learn to protect myself – and it made me stronger,” she told The Guardian in February 2018. “It could have made me step backwards with my self-discovery. Instead, it pushed me further.”
  6. Her talent is what she is really focused on. Even though Daniela is an advocate for trans rights, she really wants her talents as an actress to shine through in all of her performances. In fact, in her debut role, that was the main thing she wanted to stress. “I truly appreciate that I’m getting a lot of love from the public, from everybody, from the media. But I respect those people who are activists, who are committed to changing the world and to having an impact from a legislative standpoint when it comes to the LGBT community,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “But my, myself, I feel that I am an actress and that’s my role.”

You go girl!
