Sex and the City has been off the air for over a decade, but it will forever be in our hearts (and on our screens, thanks to reruns). If you’ve got a Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, or Charlotte in your life – hey, we all have at least one – you’re in luck, because we’ve found a handful of the hands-down best SATC-themed stocking stuffers for the holiday season. And hey, if you’re the Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, or Charlotte . . . well, you’ve got some hints to start dropping!
This year could certainly be categorized as “rough,” which could explain why so many of us were so obsessed with nostalgia in 2018. From switching up our fashion choices to binge-watching ’90s reboots, looking back a couple of decades was all the rage – and music videos reflected it, too.
Drake reunited the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation for his “I’m Upset” video back in May, and Charli XCX and Troye Sivan brought it back to the golden age of my youth for “1999.” But most recently, Ariana Grande took us all on a trip down memory lane when she paid homage to classic 2000s teen movies in the fun-filled visuals for “Thank U, Next.” Ahead, see which artists turned back time in their videos this year.
Mamie Gummer is pregnant! Us Weekly confirmed on Friday that the 35-year-old actress, who is Meryl Streep’s eldest child, is expecting her first child with fiancé Mehar Sethi. Earlier in the week, Mamie gave a glimpse of her growing belly when she hit the red carpet for the premiere of Mary Queen of Scots in NYC. Not only will this be Mamie’s first bundle of joy, but it will also make grandparents out of her famous parents, Meryl and her longtime husband, Don Gummer. Mamie and Mehar were engaged in August; she was previously married to Benjamin Walker, whom she split from in 2013. The next year should be extra exciting for Mamie, who is also set to star alongside Mahershala Ali in the upcoming season of HBO’s True Detective.
Congrats to Mamie (and Meryl!) on her growing family!
Dolly Parton made a rare red carpet appearance to celebrate the premiere of Dumplin’, a new Netflix movie based on a book of the same name. Dolly, who recorded the soundtrack for the movie, was joined by the film’s stars Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston, who looked amazing in a black sequin minidress. The event also brought out drag queen and Dolly impersonator Jason CoZmo, who playfully posed with the real D.P. on the carpet – not only is the resemblance pretty uncanny, but I’m also really hoping they shared hair and makeup tips.
Speaking of hair, Dolly had us all shook earlier this week when she debuted a sleek new look; how gorgeous does she look? The singer also had us in stitches when she dragged her longtime husband on national TV and gave us chills with her haunting new rendition of the classic “Jolene.” We’re so glad Dolly’s back on the scene in such a big way! Keep reading to see her twinning on the red carpet.
Dolly Parton is a country music darling, Hollywood favorite, and all-around national treasure. With a career than spans 50 years, Dolly has composed over 3,000 songs, including memorable hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” and “Coat of Many Colors.” In addition to her mesmerizing music career, Dolly has also charmed audiences with her roles in films like 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias. We can also thank her for the iconic quip, “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap” – and don’t even get us started on Dollywood. We’re celebrating Dolly by looking back on her early life in pictures. We will always love you, Dolly.
Jason Momoa is hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time this week, and apparently he’s getting prepped for the gig by making himself really, really comfortable at Studio 8H. In a new promo clip for the show, the Aquaman star takes over page duties at the NBC studio and basically becomes the most dedicated, take-no-prisoners employee they’ve ever seen. With a scrunchie on his wrist (you gotta be ready to throw your hair up!), Jason tackles answering a very important phone call by busting out his scariest, Taken-style tactics and . . . even a few sexy stripper moves? Watch the video above now, since you really do need to see it for yourself. Oh, and don’t forget to see below for a photo of Jason, in nothing but a towel, casually strolling the SNL hallways.
Michelle Obama has been busy promoting her new memoir, Becoming, and is opening up about everything from how husband Barack proposed to being a parent of two young women. In a recent interview with Good Housekeeping, the former first lady was asked if she had any advice for another first lady of sorts who is also gearing up to become a parent: Meghan Markle. Michelle was asked if she had any guidance for Meghan by a Good Housekeeping reader: “We’ve all fallen in love with America’s princess, Meghan Markle. What advice would you give her for her new role, which is a little like that of a First Lady?”
“Like me, Meghan probably never dreamed that she’d have a life like this, and the pressure – from yourself and from others – can sometimes feel like a lot,” Michelle answered. “So my biggest advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything.”
“I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends, before I launched into more ambitious work,” she continued. “Once I was ready, I chose to work on issues that I had a strong personal passion for. I chose children’s health because I’d lived through the difficulty of raising healthy kids as a mom. I focused on increasing access to education because I saw the power of education in my own life – that’s why I spent years talking to minority and first-generation students about getting to and through college. I wanted to do whatever I could to help them rise above the doubters that would come their way. There’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that – and I think she can maximize her impact for others, as well as her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally.”
Meghan officially became a member of the British royal family when she married Prince Harry in May, and the couple are expecting their first child next Spring. Harry has been longtime friends with the Obamas – he first worked with Michelle and Jill Biden on an event to honor military families in 2013, and they most recently came together for a visit to Chicago in 2017, just before he announced his engagement. While it hasn’t been confirmed if Michelle has met Meghan, it’s safe to say that they have a lot in common. Not only do they share a passion for education, health, women’s rights, and the empowerment of girls, but Michelle can also certainly relate to the level of scrutiny the duchess faces; both have had to adjust to new lives in the public eye, and both have managed to remain poised and graceful while being attacked for everything from their race to their clothing choices.
In my opinion, if there’s anyone who can give Meghan Markle advice on how to navigate her new world (besides, you know, her sister-in-law Kate Middleton), it’s probably Michelle. She’s got the experience, she’s got the wisdom, and she’s got the arms. Hopefully we’ll get to see photos of these two extraordinary women spending time together soon, but for now, see Michelle’s cute moments with Harry over the years ahead.
Congratulations are in order for Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas! The couple tied the knot in Jodhpur, India, on Saturday in a Christian ceremony at the Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace. The Quantico star stunned in a custom gown by Ralph Lauren, while her singer beau stayed sharp in a tuxedo by the same designer. They said their vows in front of friends and family members, including Nick’s brothers, Kevin and Joe, and their respective partners, Danielle Jonas and Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Nick’s father, Paul Kevin Jonas Sr, officiated the ceremony.
Priyanka and Nick touched down in India on Nov. 22 and spent time with Priyanka’s parents, Ashok and Madhu, in Delhi. There, they had a traditional puja prayer ceremony at the actress’s family home before heading to Jodhpur to kick off the wedding festivities.
News of Nick and Priyanka’s relationship first broke in May, and the “Chains” singer popped the question two months later. Nick opened up about the romantic moment in Priyanka’s Vogue January cover interview, revealing that she “took about 45 seconds” to respond. Even though the couple have officially gotten hitched, the party is nowhere near over; celebrations will continue until Dec. 3, and Priyanka even admitted to Vogue that guests “will need vacations after this wedding.”
Cheers to Nick and Priyanka!
We knew 2018 was going to be a big one for the British royal family, but getting to see more of the firm’s famous members – whether they were walking down the aisle, roasting each other in speeches, or getting their life at the polo – was a real treat this year. There were weddings, babies, pregnancies, and tours, all giving us deeper glimpses into their royal lives and more opportunities to feel like maybe, just maybe, we have more in common with the Windsors than we thought. It might be a hard choice, but now that we’re nearing the end of 2018, it’s time to pick your favorite royal of the year! Click on a photo to cast your vote before the poll closes on Dec. 21.
As someone who has seen all 180 episodes of The Golden Girls multiple times, I feel pretty qualified to suggest holiday gifts based on the show. Even though it’s been off the air for over 20 years, younger generations are able to get their fix of Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose thanks to plenty of hilarious reruns and cute merch. So whether it’s your mom, your best friend, or your boss, if you’ve got a Golden Girls fan in your life, these present picks are for you. In the words of Sophia Petrillo: “Picture it.” Can’t you already see the smile on their face?
The British royal family has a long list of Christmas traditions, from multiple church services to a rowdy gift exchange – and while we’ll soon get a glimpse of this year’s family Christmas cards and hear fun details about Prince Louis’s first holiday, we also wanted to take the time to look back at some of the best royal holiday pictures from past years. See major moments like the queen’s broadcasts and Prince William’s first Christmas when you scroll through now.
Prince Charles celebrated his 70th birthday with a fun family bash at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday that brought out his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. The event was also attended, of course, by Charles’s mom, Queen Elizabeth II, who gave a lighthearted and sentimental speech about her firstborn heir. “It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday; it means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up,” her majesty said, then alluded to Charles’s well-known love of gardening and the environment: “It is rather like – to use an analogy I am certain will find favor – planting a tree and being able to watch it grow.”
No stranger to throwing out a savage one-liner, the queen continued with a clever joke inspired by her own mom, the queen mother. “My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out.” Classic!
“Over his 70 years, Philip and I have seen Charles become a champion of conservation and the arts, a great charitable leader, a dedicated and respected heir to the throne – to stand comparison with any in history – and a wonderful father,” the queen went on. “Most of all, sustained by his wife, Camilla, he is his own man, passionate and creative. So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original. To you, Charles. To the Prince of Wales.” By the way, Duchy Originals is the leading organic UK food brand that Charles founded in 1990, which gives all its profits to charitable causes.
While the queen was able to toast her son at his party, she was noticeably absent from the recent family photos taken to commemorate Charles’s big milestone. It’s alleged that she may have opted to give Charles the spotlight and introduce him and his family as the next generation of the British monarchy. In honor of Charles’s birthday and the queen’s sweet speech, scroll through for a few of their cutest photos together.
Let’s be real: the royal family’s genes are strong. We’ve seen just how much Prince George takes after his father, Prince William, and discovered that Princess Charlotte is practically the queen’s spitting image – but when it comes to the family’s latest addition, Prince Louis, we can’t help but notice how much he takes after his mom – and a newly resurfaced photo of Kate Middleton as a baby pretty much proves it.
In new official portraits taken to commemorate Prince Charles’s 70th birthday, the heir poses with wife Camilla, his sons, William and Harry, and their respective wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Also adding an adorable touch to the photos are Charles’s grandchildren; George, Charlotte, and Louis all make cute appearances, but it’s 7-month-old Louis who nearly steals the show. Louis, who stayed cozy in Kate’s arms for the shots, appears to have inherited her sparkly hazel-green eyes, thick eyebrows, and wide smile. And once you see his sweet face side by side with Kate’s as a baby, you’ll notice their resemblance even more.
We’ve only gotten a handful of glimpses of the latest baby Cambridge – once hours after his birth, in sweet portraits with his older sister, and again as he slept through his own christening – so getting to see him again was a real treat. It will be interesting to see if Louis continues to take after Kate as he gets older, right? Scroll through to see how much Kate and Louis look alike as babies.
There are a ton of brand new and delightfully nostalgic Christmas albums to dive into every year, but I always love taking it back to the glory days of Motown. The season is made for swaying, twirling, and two-stepping to holiday classics, and I maintain that nobody does Christmas music better than soul singers. From The Supremes to Stevie Wonder to Smokey Robinson, read through for the best soul albums to play during parties, road trips, and anywhere else you want an extra dose of jazzy Christmas spirit.
Following the Kardashian-Jenner women on Instagram is not for the faint of heart – if you’re easily scandalized by barely-there bikini shots, sultry selfies, or a healthy handful of nudes, it’s probably not the activity for you. But it’s totally normal to be fascinated by the give-no-f*cks confidence that radiates out of Kim, Kourtney, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie, especially when it comes to their social media accounts. And this year, between welcoming babies, juggling lucrative deals, and of course, dealing with a little drama, they’ve managed to steam things up even more.
Since keeping up with this family is a full-time job in itself, we’re looking back at the Kardashian-Jenner crew’s hottest photos from 2018 – scroll through to see them all now.
With the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s third child, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding and baby news, and Princess Charlotte’s endless sass (not to mention other major events like Trooping the Colour, Royal Ascot, and Princess Eugenie’s wedding), it’s been a very exciting year for royal family fans! As someone whose personal obsession with the British royals hit a fever pitch this year, I’m honored to suggest these gifts for the royal fan in your own life. Scroll through to see and shop them now!
Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk tied the knot in a gorgeous ceremony at their Hamptons home on Sept. 29, and the actress finally gave us a glimpse of the intimate event on Friday. In a Goop article titled “The Wedding Party: GP x Brad Tie the Knot,” Gwyneth and Brad’s Amagansett wedding is described as boasting “perfect weather, a superlative dinner, a dance party for the ages, and a dress that defies adjectives.” Sure enough, Gwyneth stunned in an intricate lace gown by Valentino before changing into a short white Stella McCartney romper for that raucous dance party.
The couple exchanged vows in front of 70 family members and A-list friends, including Gwyneth’s famous mom, Blythe Danner, and Robert Downey Jr., Steven Spielberg, Cameron Diaz, and Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, who hosted a rehearsal dinner for the couple at their own home the night before. Shortly after their nuptials, Gwyneth shared a caption-less photo of their wedding bands on Instagram.
Gwyneth first met the Emmy-winning TV writer when she made a guest appearance on Glee in 2014. They went public with their romance a year later after being spotted on vacation in Italy. In 2017, Brad popped the question, and they celebrated with a star-studded engagement party hosted by Brad’s longtime collaborator Ryan Murphy. “We feel incredibly lucky to have come together at this juncture in our lives when our collective successes and failures can serve as building blocks for a healthy and happy relationship,” they said in a joint statement.
Gwyneth was previously married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, and they have two children together, 14-year-old daughter Apple and 12-year-old son Moses, who were both by their mom’s side on her big day. Brad was also previously married to producer Suzanne Bukinik, and they also have two kids, son Brody and daughter Isabella, who played roles in the wedding as well.
Warning: this post contains spoilers for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
I’ve decided that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is very much my new favorite thing. After a weekend of binge-watching the dark new Netflix series, I may or may not have joined a coven and gotten baptized in the Church of Night – I’m kidding, I haven’t . . . yet. Anyway, as much as I enjoyed the first season, I am now left with a boatload of questions that I’d appreciate having answered for me when the second season rolls around next year. Filming is underway, and I promise I’ll be patient while waiting for my 10 episodes – but in the meantime, here are eight things I’ll be stewing over until the next witching hour cometh.
Jessica Simpson brought the LOLs with her Halloween costume this year. The singer and footwear mogul teamed up with her husband, Eric Johnson, to re-create a movie poster from the 1988 buddy comedy Twins. Jessica was unrecognizable in a bald cap and suit as she struck the classic pose as Danny DeVito, while Eric sported a matching getup while channeling Arnold Schwarzenegger; in the film, the actors play fraternal twins who are separated at birth.
Eric and Jessica, who is pregnant with the couple’s third child, are certainly not strangers to the funny costume game. Last year, they dressed as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, and back in 2011, Jessica announced her first pregnancy with a clever “mummy” costume. See more of the best celebrity costumes here!
Jennifer Garner is busy, you guys. She just doesn’t have time to dress up for Halloween, recite Macbeth, and make salsa from scratch, so she put her multitasking mom skills to work on Wednesday with a wickedly hilarious Instagram video. In the clip, Jennifer giggles her way through a pretty impressive reading of the “Song of the Witches” from the classic Shakespeare play while also putting together a bowl of her tomatillo salsa; from her Maleficent-inspired witch makeup to her spooky storytelling voice, it’s enough to make you want to show up at her house with your own bag of tortilla chips. Oh, and in case you were strapped for Halloween party snacks, Jennifer included her salsa recipe in her caption, with the last step being, “Cast a spell. Yum.” Watch for yourself now, then check out 50 more reasons to follow Jennifer Garner on Instagram.
